Umea School of Architecture
Arts Campus at Umea University - Sweden
Henning Larsen Architects
http://www.henninglarsen.com
Une école d'architecture dans laquelle il suffit juste d'observer les espaces pour apprendre ! Sublime exercice pour un étudiant et un architecte. Les conceptes de
"peau" "masses" et "vides" prennent tout leur sens ici.

THE WINERY
Gravity Winery
Peso da Régua - Portugal
The proposal of enlargement of the Quinta do Vallado Winery and Hotel, conciliates the need of the extension of the existing cellar with the proper integration in the landscape. The
intervention aims to maintain the existing buildings, completing them with the necessary reorganization of the construction of new buildings: Fermentation Warehouse, Hogshead Warehouse and
Reception. The extension of the winery that functions by gravity forces the understanding of the whole productive system and requires great severity, discipline, and restriction in the layout of
the building’s quotas. The new volumes create a relation of tension and balance between buildings and topography, merging in the land declaring its artificial nature. The Hogshead Warehouse is at
the same time autonomous and dialogues with the landscape, bearing in mind the topography of the Douro’s terraced landscape.A big encrusted mass in the field ends in a cantilevered beam.
Therefore, or the building is embedded in the ground, becoming a rock and also a physical barrier, or it loosens, allowing its crossing. The project conciliates the structure and infrastructure
in the conception of the ancestral arch form.
The Hogshead Warehouse with an exterior parallelepiped volume and an interior arch space presents a mass that allows a good heat insulation performance. The omittance of the non-resistant
material of the walls creates the possibility of the existence of a ventilation space, as well as an infrastructure tunnel and a natural ventilation system. All the volumes are built in concrete
with a roughening finishing in the interior. On the outside the buildings are coated with local burnt shale worked in a contemporary way. Guedes+DeCampos Architecture

Sperone Westwater Gallery
Design by Foster&Partners Architects
New York -2008/2010
http://www.fosterandpartners.com
Co-architects: Adamson Associates
Client: Sperone Westwater
Consultants: Buro Happold , Sciame, Buro Happold , Buro Happold, Edgett Williams, JAM Consultants Inc.
Nearly 35 years after its conception, Sperone Westwater continues to exhibit the work of prominent artists of diverse nationality
and age, who work in various media. The concept for the Gallery is both a response to the dynamic urban character of New York’s Bowery and a desire to rethink the way in which the public engages
with art in the setting of a gallery. The nine-storey building is part of a bold initiative to reinvigorate the neighborhood and the design will pioneer an innovative approach to vertical
movement within a gallery building.
The centerpiece of the concept is a 12 x 20-foot moving room that connects the five floors where works of art will be displayed.
The room allows visitors to move gradually between levels and will be a prominent feature along the Bowery, visible from the street, its gentle pace contrasting with the fast-moving traffic. At
any given floor, the exhibition space can be extended by parking the moving room as required, by the use of an additional elevator and stairs which provide alternative access.
The design incorporates a mezzanine floor and double-height display area at street level, a sculpture terrace towards the park and
a private viewing gallery at the top of the public floors. A setback marks the location of the offices. Works of art will be stored primarily in the basement, while a library – that also
functions as an events space – is located at the top of the building below the mechanical floor. The CNC milled glass facade that houses the moving room act as a buffer zone, protecting the
building from extreme temperatures and acoustically insulating the galleries.
